地球儀専門店スタッフがここシカゴにやってきました。
そして、街の中心部ダウンタウンには何やら巨大な地球儀が勢ぞろい!

Replogle Globes, the world's largest globe manufacturer
リプルーグル本社前にある大きな看板。
創立75周年の2005年に記念として建てられたものです。
芝生のグリーンにブルーが映えて綺麗でした。

A big signboard at the entrance was made in 2005 to celebrate Replogle’s 75 years.
Beautiful blue was shining out of green grass.

こちらが本社で、後ろ側に工場があります。
どこまでがリプルーグル社か分からないくらいの広さと大きさ。さすがアメリカ!

エントランスには色々なリプルーグルの地球儀が飾られています。

They show some original globes at the entrance of main office.

良い製品を作っている企業として表彰された時のトロフィーも飾ってありました。

Replogle Globes was commended by the city as a bluechip firm supplying high quality products.

古いものから新しいもの、たくさんの地球儀を見せていただきました。

カートグラファー(地図制作)の方と。今制作している地図のお話などを伺いました。
リプルーグル社では、常にカートグラファーの方が新しい地図を作っています。

With a cartographer. They are updating maps everyday and supports maintaining Replogle’s globe as a latest information source.

工場にて、手貼りの見学。
広い工場の中にある静かな1室で作られていました。
地図を1枚1枚慎重に貼っていきます。
集中力と技術のいる作業です。

Globe coverers at the factory. Large sized globes are all hand made. They need long-time training and consentration to make accurate map globes.


ディプロマットの地図の一部です。これを切り球体に貼っていきます。
紙の切れ端は大きな機械があり、リサイクルしています。

こちらでは機械によって作られています。
大きな機械で半球ごとに成型し、さらに別の機械で凹凸加工を施していきます。

赤道部分で接着し、球体に。
地球儀らしくなりました。
しっかり接着するまでしばらくの間乾燥させます。
その後、工場内で作られている架台に組み立て完成です。

日本語やスペイン語など様々な言語の地球儀がつくられています。
ここから世界に出荷されています。

〜ボートクルーズでシカゴ建築を巡る〜
Chicago Architecture River Cruise
リプルーグル社訪問後、シカゴのダウンタウン散策です。
ファーストレディー号に乗って建築クルーズをしてきました。

After visiting Replogle Globes, we joined river cruise guiding Chicago’s magnificent architecture from the perspetive of the Chicago River. Did you know Chicago is famous for the architecture?

リグリービルディングから出発です。
歴史を感じさせられる、白くて美しい建物です。

Departure from Riverside Gardens at the Michigan Avenue. Wrigley Building is the headquaters of the famous chewing gum company Wrigley.

こちらもミシガン湖までのクルーズです。
たくさんの船が行き交っています。

We saw many other boats on the way. This is one for Lake Michigan.

いよいよ出発、ガイドの方による説明を聞きながら摩天楼の下をクルーズです。

Let’s start cruising under the skyscraper!

右側は曲線が美しい333ウエストワッカー・ドライブ。東京の汐留シオサイトのよう。青空が映ってきれいです。
川から見上げるビルはどれも大きくて圧巻です。

とうもろこしのようなユニークなマンション。上が住居、下が駐車場、さらにその下に・・・

Marina City, called ‘corn’ or ‘beehive’. Upper floors are residence space and lowers are parking lots. Still more under them…

レストランやマリーナ!

Restaurants and marina! It’s ‘city within a city’.

ダウンタウンを走る電車。
この日は天候もよく、とても気持ちの良いクルーズです。

Train called ‘Loop’ running around downtown. Trains are important transportation in Chicago.

真中の大きいビルがシカゴのシンボル、シアーズタワー。
クルーズの後にシアーズタワーの展望台へ上ります。

The high building at the center is the Sears Tower, a symbol of Chicago. 442m in height and has 110 stories. We are going to the skydeck after cruising.

ミシガン湖に到着。右のビルはレイクポイントタワー、驚くことに高層マンション。こちらも印象的な形です。

Now we are on Lake Michigan! The building of impressive shape on the right is the Lake Point Tower, condos.

ミシガン湖からの眺め。ココからの眺めが最高とガイドの方が言っていました。
空の青がビルにも反射して、目の前に広がる街並みは本当に美しかったです!

シカゴ商品取引所の建物です。

クルーズの後、ミレニアムパークという公園にて。
巨大なオブジェです。
オブジェの下に入って見上げるととっても不思議な世界が!

After cruising at the Milenium Park. A huge sculpture named ‘Cloud Gate’ reflects Chicago’s skyline and the clouds avobe.

すごく大きな噴水も!
こちらはグランドパークにある、バッキンガム・ファウンテンと言う噴水です。

Buckingham Fountain is also one of Chicago’s most popular attractions. Water blowing up to the height of 46 meters!

〜シカゴのシンボル、シアーズタワーから地球を眺める〜

シアーズタワー、スカイデックエントランス。
こちらのクールグローブスというイベントを見るために立ち寄りました。

そして、シアーズタワーの展望台から地球を眺めます!

Skydeck Entrance of the Sears Tower. We have came here to to view the earth from skydeck, and to see the project CoolGlobes.

これがクールグローブス。
思っていたより大きい!
エントランス前で最初に見た作品です。

クールグローブスは、アートを通して地球温暖化問題を考えるイベントです。

Far bigger than we expected! This is the first coolglobe we saw at the entrance. CoolGlobes uses the medium of public art to inspire people to take action against global warming.

中には、アーティストや著名人が思い思いに作った地球儀が。
右はシカゴブルズの選手のサインがたくさん書いてあります。

These are mini globes (11 inches in diameter) made by personalities.

シカゴカブスの選手のもの。
この地球儀たちは展示の後に、地球温暖化防止の為のチャリティーに出されるそうです。

左はヒラリークリントンさんの地球儀。アメリカ国旗の3色でシンプル。
右は別の地球儀の写真です。
北極で白熊が溺れてしまう・・・地球温暖化の最も影響を受けている場所が明確に表現されています。

ここはなんと地上412m!!
先ほど建築クルーズで見上げた建物達が遥か下の方に!
夕日を浴びてとても綺麗です。

今日訪れたミレニアムパーク(巨大なオブジェの写真)とクルーズで周った建物。

視界を遮るものが無く、本当に素晴らしい眺めです。
地平線が、なんとなく丸いでしょうか。

Nothing to cut our view off. Horizon seems a little bit curving…?

五大湖の一つ、ミシガン湖。
湖といっても、対岸は見えません。まるで海のようです。水平線が綺麗です。

Lake Michigan, like ocean! You can’t see the opposite bank.

地平線の彼方に沈む夕日です。
シカゴは緯度が東京よりも北寄りなので訪れた9月上旬は19時ごろの日没で、日が長かったです。

Sunset.

日没後は街の灯りが美しいです。
埠頭のドームのある建物が天文台、隣の白い建物が水族館、そしてその隣がクールグローブスが展示してある博物館です。
左側の湖沿いからこの博物館まで、沢山のクールグローブスが並んでいということなので、明日はまた地球儀探検です!
あまりの素晴らしさに日が暮れるまで見入ってしまいました。

Just after sunset, you can see the beautiful city lights. We are gong to see the CoolGlobes exhibition tommorow. The superb view kept us there until pitch-dark.

今日も本当にいい天気です。
左にはミシガン湖、湖からの風が爽やかです。

近くでは、セグウェイを楽しむ人々が。以外に速く、風を切って走る様子はとても気持ちよさそうです。

いよいよここからスタートです。
最初の作品は、地球儀に緑豊かな美しい絵が描かれていました。

岬にある天文台まで足を運びました。
大きい日時計がありました。
ちょうど午後5時頃です。

At the end of the CoolGlobes was the Adler Planetarium. A big sundial - It’s 5:30 p.m.

アドラー天文台です。
1930年に建てられた建物は歴史を感じさせられる重厚感があります。

The Adler Planetarium was built in 1930. An Old and profound atmosphere building.

再び、今日のスタート地点へ。
雁の群れもどこかへ帰る途中です。影が朝とは逆に長くなりました。

Going back to the starting point. Wild geese are going their home?

地球儀を作る人々と、様々なメッセージの込められたクールな地球儀に感動の連続でした。本当にあっという間のシカゴ地球儀探検でした!
名残惜しく、空港へ到着すると・・・
なんと!空港のロビーには地球儀のとても素敵なイルミネーションが!!
最後の嬉しいサプライズでした。

We were so much impressed meeting the people making globes with strong passion and the CoolGlobes with various hot messages. And at the O’Hare airport, what waiting for us feeling reluctant to leave Chicago was…
